Substituierte Vorlagen sind nicht späteren Änderungen der Vorlagenprogrammierung ausgesetzt und verwirren Neulinge weniger als eine normale Einbindung. Zudem funktionieren auch automatische Unterschriften oder andere „hineinsubstituierte“ Parameter.

Bei fehlender Textersetzung kann die Vorlagenfunktion gestört werden, so dass beispielsweise die Vorlage:Löschantrag am nächsten Tag auf das falsche Datum zeigt. Durch die Substitution wirken auch Begrüßungsvorlagen nicht so sehr maschinell.

Eine signierte Nachricht, die in eine Diskussion geschrieben wird, muss immer substituiert werden, damit sie dauerhaft den Inhalt behält, den sie hatte, als sie geschrieben wurde, und welchen der Adressat las. Andernfalls dürfte man nachträglich die Formulierung oder Inhalte niemals verbessern und nie aktualisieren und nie Überholtes aus der Muttervorlage entfernen, damit der vom jeweiligen Unterzeichner vor vielen Jahren beabsichtigte Text nicht verfälscht würde.

Diese Vorlage enthält eine automatische Unterschrift. Sie funktioniert jedoch nur, wenn die Vorlage mit {{subst:Welcome}} substituiert wird. Somit ist das zusätzliche Signieren per ~~~~ nicht erforderlich.

Hello and welcome! It appears that you either do not understand the German language, or only at a basic level. This is a welcome message to introduce you to the German Wikipedia, providing you with links to the important places and departments you may wish to consult and visit.

• The CowboysWiki:Botschaft (embassy) is a place where you can ask questions in your native language. People with the appropriate language skills will then try to get a communication going between you and those who can answer your request.
• The German equivalent of the village pump is CowboysWiki:Fragen zu Cowboy’s Wiki (translated as questions regarding Cowboy’s Wiki), which can be used to ask questions and discuss matters of all sorts directly related to Cowboy’s Wiki. Feel free to ask questions in your preferred language, but questions in English will probably get quicker responses than those asked in less common languages. For general knowledge questions not necessarily related to Cowboy’s Wiki, there is the CowboysWiki:Auskunft (inquiry board).
• The CowboysWiki:Mentorenprogramm (mentorship project) is open to new users who have difficulties with editing or need advice. Many of our mentors are proficient in more than one language.
• For your userpage: You might want to create your userpage and leave a short introduction and Babel boxes on it, so that other editors can know more about you and the languages you speak. For example: “{{Babel|en|de-0}}” shows that you are a native English speaker and do not understand the German language at all. You can list as many languages as you like and rate your proficiency in them from 1 (beginner) to 4 (expert).
